Ex-conseller Josep Rull, who has recently joined MutuaTerrassa's legal advice, visited the facilities of our Laboratory in Viladecavalls.

Catlab has been accredited last September by ENAC by the UNE-EN ISO 15189 Standard, for the study of LIEs by Flow Cytometry, for duodenal biopsy samples obtained by endoscopy. It is a rapid and non-invasive test that contributes to the diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of celiac disease. On the 15th, a conference on Strategic Alliances was held at the Catalan Union of Hospitals (UCH), where the director of Catlab, Dr. Imma Caballé explained the Catlab model. After explaining the origins of Catlab, the operation and organization of the laboratory was described.

Organized by the IFCC, the EFLM and the SEQCML, this biannual meeting has shown the latest developments in the research and clinic of the different areas of Laboratory Medicine. With more than 1500 communications and 100 speakers, the congress has been a successful participation. In the topics discussed, we have the epigenetics applied to cancer, the microbiome, big data or quality management in POCT (point-of-care-testing). The "Departament de Salut" has launched the "Grup de Treball de Laboratori d'Anàlisis Clíniques" to promote procedures based on risk management and promote patient safety. The project "Impact of the early detection of resistance to antimicrobials in the reduction of inadequate treatments in bacteremia caused by enterobacteria", is a multidisciplinary and coordinated project involving the areas of microbiology of Catlab, infectious diseases and hospital pharmacy of Hospital Universitari Mútua de Terrassa, Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa (Hospital de Terrassa) and Hospital Sant Joan de Deu de Martorell, with the objective of monitoring and optimizing the number of empirical treatments, reducing the response time of the results of identification and sensitivity of the bacteremia by Enterobacteria.

One of the projects approved by the "Marató" of 2012 dedicated to the fight against cancer was "Prediction of advanced colonic neoplasia in symptomatic patients within the rapid diagnosis circuit of colorectal cancer by means of a score based on the fecal immunological test (COLONOTIF Study)".This project has been carried out by professionals of Catlab as reference laboratory, together with professionals of the Digestive Service of Hospital Mutua Terrassa, Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa, Hospital Parc Taulí de Sabadell, members also of the Centro de Investigaciones Biomédicas en Red de enfermedades hepáticas y digestivas (CIBERehd), and the Pla Oncològic de Catalunya (IDIBELL).Through this study, a tool has been created to prioritize colonoscopies in patients with non-specific symptoms of colon cancer. In these patients, the fecal occult blood test is performed, and depending on the result of this test, it is classified as a risk group, and the colonoscopy is performed with more or less urgency to rule out the presence of colorectal cancer.

On the 7th of June the Scientific Conference "Genètica: del Laboratori a la clinica clinica" was held in Catlab. The three invited speakers, Dr. Anna Veiga, Dr. Clara Serra and Dr. Manel Esteller have held three very interesting conferences related to different aspects of genetics; stem cells, epigenetics and genetic counseling. This year 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the start of the Catlab activity. In these 10 years the Catlab project has been consolidated; in 2012 the "Laboratori de la Fundació de l'Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu de Martorell" was incorporated, and we currently have 96% of our activity accredited by ISO 15189: 2013. With a staff of 140 professionals, we are a high capacity analytical laboratory, with facilities of a high degree of automation. From a high technological level, we face the new challenges in the fields of Genetics and Molecular Microbiology. To commemorate the 10 years, different acts will be performed; including a scientific conference dedicated to genetics in clinical practice. Among the speakers we will have Dr. Anna Veiga, Dr. Clara Serra and Dr. Manel Esteller.

On February 19 was published in "Diario Médico" an interview with the director of Catlab, on the role that the clinical laboratory will play in the future. As President of the SEQCML, Dra. Caballé requests to unify the specialties of Biochemistry and Clinical Analysis, and to promote innovation and quality, advancing towards accreditation in ISO 15189. We attach the entire interview.

The doctoral thesis has been carried out by the biologist Elisabeth González Lao. The study identifies all the possible errors that may occur in the processes of the Laboratory, and the preventive and corrective actions to be implemented. Last Thursday May 11th, the "Premis Cambra" Jury made public the 12 companies awarded with "Premis Cambra 2017". The Awards are the annual public recognition that the "Cambra de Comerç, Industry and Serveis de Terrassa" grants to those companies that contribute to enhance the social and economic development of its demarcation. Catlab has been awarded in the category of Healthy Company, for the implementation of a corporate policy in the field of prevention and health surveillance integrated and sustainable, aimed at promoting healthy habits within the work environment.
